Citizenships

How to become a Citizen of Australia

On 12th September 2007, the Australian Parliament passed the Australian Citizenship Amendment (Citizenship Testing) Bill 2007. This means that from Monday 1st October 2007, most people are required to pass a test before they apply for Australian Citizenship by conferral. New Application and information forms have been introduced and from Monday 1st October 2007, new applicants must use these forms.

Contact the Deparment of Immigration & Citizenship for all enquiries.

The forms and further information are available from the department via their website or by calling the Australian Citizenship line on 13 18 80.

The department will explain to you the requirements and process involved.

The Steps

Once you have received your confirmation from the Department of Immigration & Citizenship approving your Australian Citizenship your local or nominated Council will be contacted by the department to make arrangements for the presentation of your Citizenship certifiate.

You will then be contacted by the Council to advise you of the date to attend a ceremony.

You are then required to contact the Council office to confirm your attendance at the Ceremony. Ceremonies are conducted by the Alexandrina Council as required and also at the Australian Day functions.

Details about the Ceremony

The Australian Citizenship Ceremony is a formal occasion, taking approx. 20 minutes. The ceremony is a simple and dignified ceremony and candidates are invited to attend along with friends and family.

During the ceremony you will be asked to make a Pledge of Commitment in English, in order for you to receive your Certificate of Australian Citizenship.

His Worship the Mayor, Kym McHugh will normally conduct the ceremony.

Private Ceremony

If for any reason you do not wish to attend a public ceremony we are happy to organise a private ceremony depending on the availability of the Mayor.  Please contact the Executive Assistant on 8555 7000
