Climate Emergency Advisory Committee

Call for nominations

At its meeting of 16 December 2019, Alexandrina Council supported a climate emergency declaration which included, as one of the actions, the establishment of a section 41 Climate Emergency Advisory Committee (the Committee).

The Committee will consist of the two (2) Elected Member Representatives as well as the Mayor in an ex-officio capacity, no more than five (5) community representatives, including one (1) Independent Chairperson.

About the positions

Up to five Committee member positions, including one position for a Chairperson, are available for community representatives.  Positions are voluntary and members will be appointed for a 2-year term.

The Committee’s function is to support and provide advice to Council on matters relating to its Climate Emergency Declaration, as carried at its meeting of 16 December 2019, and as may be amended by further resolution of the Council from time to time.

It is a pre-requisite that community representatives appointed to the Section 41 Alexandrina Climate Emergency Advisory Committee live or are ratepayers in the Alexandrina Council area.

The functions and responsibilities of the Committee include, but are not limited to:

  • assisting Council in developing and implementing a Climate Emergency Action Plan to be adopted by Council;
  • collaborating with Council’s project team leader, taking into consideration such things as project outcomes and milestones;
  • collaborating with Council’s project team leader to guide community consultation;
  • assisting to implement the outcomes of the Climate Emergency Action Plan that reflect Council and community aspirations;
  • focussing on the climate emergency and creating solutions, rather than simply drawing attention to the issue of a climate emergency;
  • provide feedback and information to and from other interested community groups and members about Council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan;
  • assisting Council in the education of the community and Council staff to become climate-resilient and climate-smart, with the goal of carbon neutrality by an achievable timeframe, as set out under the Climate Emergency Action Plan; and
  • reviewing existing Council policies and plans, with a view to facilitating a climate emergency response, including but not limited to, initiation of climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives.

In addition to an interest or experience in these environmental issues, community representatives appointed to the Committee members should also have skills, knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following:

  • social mobilisation;
  • capacity for big picture vision relating to the climate emergency challenge as a whole;
  • diversity and inclusion;
  • capacity to foster creativity and innovation;
  • fund sourcing;
  • links to relevant network, community groups and wider community;
  • track record of achieving positive outcomes through collaborative projects.

Applicants interested to apply for the position of the Chairperson must have the following skills:

  • demonstrated experience working as the chair of a group dealing with politically sensitive tasks;
  • demonstrated ability to lead and achieve results;
  • good understanding of the science behind climate change;
  • previous board governance experience or skills.
