Alexandrina Council in conjunction with the City of Victor Harbor, District Council of Yankalilla and Kangaroo Island Council have combined waste resources to form the Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority (FRWA).
FRWA is now responsible for each Council's waste operations including collection of kerbside waste and operation of transfer stations. FRWA is a great example of local government working together to achieve efficiencies across boundaries.
All waste enquiries are to be directed to FRWA.
Alexandrina Council, the community and FRWA are leading by example for 'best practice' in waste & recycling management. Together, we reduce waste going to landfill, increase recycling and promote a cleaner and healthier environment for today and tomorrow. The Goolwa Waste and Recycling Depot offers the residential and business communities a 'One Stop Shop' for all their waste and recycling needs. For enquiries please speak to one of our friendly staff.
Alexandrina Council aims to provide the lowest cost waste and recycling handling and disposal services to our community whilst responding to increasing environmental demands and the Zero Waste Strategy targets for reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.
A three bin domestic collection service is in place for urban areas and a two bin system in rural areas to encourage and support recycling. New initiatives for recycling and reuse are always being developed so contact FRWA for the latest news.
Fees are impacted by these increasing requirements and we may alter fees accordingly during any financial year.
If concerned please contact the Goolwa Waste & Recycling Depot on (08) 8555 7405 or Strathalbyn Waste & Recycling Depot on (08) 8536 4743 to clarify fees.
Fortnightly Kerbside Collection
At the Council meeting on 21 September 2015, Council endorsed the fortnightly collection of domestic waste and the fortnightly collection of green organics and recyclables as the kerbside waste collection service, for implementation in 2016/17.
A searchable version of the Kerbside Collection Calendar is available here. This service allows you to type in your street address and find out your collection day and schedule.
FRWA endeavours to provide a household waste collection to residents in the Alexandrina Council district in most instances. To ascertain if you are able to access a collection service past your property or at a remote location via a bin bank please contact FRWA on (08) 8555 7405.
For missed bins please contact FRWA on (08) 8555 7405.
If you have any general questions regarding your waste and recycling service please contact FRWA on (08) 8555 7405 or visit their website www.frwa.com.au

What is electronic waste (e-waste)?
E-waste is anything that needs a plug or a battery to work.
With changes in technology, households and offices are likely to have numerous electronic gadgets, many of which will only last a few years. These include everything from computers, TVs, printers and DVD players, to hairdryers and electric mixers.
Why is e-waste a problem?
E-Waste is the fastest growing waste stream in Australia. It contains many components, such as precious metals, that should not be sent to landfill.
The manufacture, use and disposal of electrical and electronic equipment purchased by Australians is estimated to generate over 42 million tonnes of greenhouse gases per year.
The issues are:
- Use of finite raw materials.E-waste can contain precious resources such as gold, copper and silver. Extraction of these elements gives them a second life.
- Toxic chemicals and heavy metals. E-waste such as computers and TVs are made up of many different components. This can include hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, chromium and brominated flame retardants which can contaminate the landfill and leach into the soil and water.
- E-waste takes up valuable space in landfill.
How to recycle your old e-waste
E-Waste products can be disposed of at the Goolwa Waste & Recycling Depot, 1226 Port Elliot Road, Goolwa.
Fees and charges may apply.
