Municipal Solid Waste and Recycling

Alexandrina Council in conjunction with the City of Victor Harbor, District Council of Yankalilla and Kangaroo Island Council have combined waste resources to form the Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority (FRWA).

The Authority is now responsible for Councils waste operations including the collection of kerbside waste. A three bin domestic collection service is in place for urban areas and a two bin system in rural areas to encourage and support recycling. New initiatives for recycling and reuse are always being developed so contact the Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority for the latest news.

Fortnightly Kerbside Collection

At the Council meeting on 21 September 2015,  Council endorsed the fortnightly collection of domestic waste and the fortnightly collection of green organics and recyclables as the kerbside waste collection service, for implementation in 2016/17.

Exceptional Circumstances Bins

The Kerbside Waste Collection Policy – Exceptional Circumstance (EC) conditions aims to meet the needs of large families, those with children in nappies or those living with a medical condition which produces extra waste (incontinence products) by allowing on application, one additional 140L general waste bin-collected fortnightly – without charge.

Community Wastewater Management Systems for Effluent Disposal

A reticulated Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS) provides for the collection and carriage of septic tank effluent or sewerage by either gravity flow or by pumping either with positive or negative pressures (vacuum), to a treatment facility that is owned, operated and maintained by the Council, or other agency. Reuse solutions are in place for the utilisation and reuse of treated effluent water.

Onsite Wastewater Management

Some properties in the Alexandrina Council are serviced by either Council run Communal Waste Management System (CWMS), privately managed CWMS, SA Water Sewer (only some properties in Hayborough) all other properties require onsite waste management.  Council approval is required for any alteration or installation of any waste control system that is not covered by SA Water.
