How to become a Citizen of Australia

Contact the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for information about citizenship applications, citizenship ceremonies and citizenship certificates.

Phone:             131 880

When you have received your confirmation from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection approving your Australian Citizenship, your local or nominated Council will be contacted by the Department to make arrangements for the presentation of your Citizenship Certificate.

Alexandrina Council conducts conferral ceremonies for approved Australian Citizenship applicants residing in the Council area several times throughout the year and on Australia Day.

The Australian Citizenship Ceremony is a formal occasion of approximately 15 minutes, depending on the number of conferees.

Citizenship conferees are invited to attend together with friends and family.

His Worship the Mayor, Keith Parkes, will normally conduct the ceremony prior to a Council Meeting.

During the ceremony you will be asked to make the Australian Citizenship Pledge and be presented with your Australian Citizenship Certificate.

If for any reason you do not wish to attend a public ceremony please contact Council’s Executive Assistant on 8555 7000 to discuss your requirements.
