Advocacy
Alexandrina Council takes it legislative role to represent the interests of our community to the wider community very seriously.
Council has a series of advocacy commitments in various strategies and plans which are identified here.
2019 Federal Election
Our Elected Members have identified twelve issues of national significance with importance to the needs and interests of the Alexandrina community. These issues are:
- Ageing and aged care
- Arts, culture and heritage
- Carers and disability services
- Climate change and the ‘climate emergency’
- Economic development and infrastructure funding
- Financial assistance grants for local government
- Key Alexandrina projects for Federal funding
- Murray Darling Basin advocacy
- Population growth
- Roads and road funding
- Women in our region
- Youth in our region.
In Alexandrina Advocates: Federal Election 2019 we put forward not only a wish list for funding but a contribution to policy development at the national level. This advocacy document identifies issues that we hope candidates and parties involved in the Federal Election will consider in their own policy development and expression of election commitments.

Alexandrina Council will continue to proactively advocate on these issues following the 2019 Federal Election, working collaboratively with the elected government and representatives for Mayo and South Australia.
Mayo Candidates Forum – 7 May 2019
Alexandrina Council will be hosting a Mayo Candidates Forum at Centenary Hall, 12 Cadell Street, Goolwa on Tuesday, 7 May 2019 from 12 noon to 2pm. The forum will be moderated by Leigh McClusky and is an opportunity for the community to hear from candidates on what they can bring to the electorate of Mayo and the Alexandrina community. RSVP is not required as the forum is open to public, however we recommend arrival when doors open at 11.30am, as seating is limited. We welcome the community’s attendance.
2018 State Election
Council has an Advocacy Plan 2017-18 summarising key issues of community interest which require the attention of external decision-makers and can be viewed here.
