Agribusiness

Alexandrina's rich agricultural heritage shapes the region's identity and economy.

Agriculture here is more than just farming – it’s a diverse and innovative sector encompassing grain, dairy, beef, lamb, poultry, eggs, olives, vegetables, and wine, among many others.

As one of the largest contributors to Alexandrina’s economy, agriculture accounts for 16.5% of the region’s total annual output, valued at over $428 million.

Alexandrina also leads the Fleurieu Peninsula in regional exports, with local producers supplying more than 62% of all exported goods, demonstrating the strength and reach of our agribusiness sector.

Supporting this success is the Agricultural Advisory Group (AAG), a collective of respected local agribusiness leaders who provide insight and guidance to Council.

Representing a broad cross-section of the agricultural community, the AAG plays a key role in shaping the future of farming and food production in Alexandrina.

Agritourism

Agritourism presents a compelling opportunity for primary producers in Alexandrina to diversify their income by creating experiences that connect visitors with the land.

From on-farm accommodation and guided tours to paddock-to-plate dining and cellar doors, these offerings allow producers to showcase the region’s agricultural richness while tapping into the thriving tourism market.

With agriculture and tourism among Alexandrina’s most significant economic drivers, the convergence of these sectors positions the region uniquely for growth in agritourism.

This potential is strongly recognised at both national and state levels. Australian Regional Tourism has identified agritourism as a key opportunity for regional economies, while the South Australian Tourism Commission actively supports its development as a way to strengthen both the agricultural and visitor economies.
