Tourism
Just an hour from Adelaide, Alexandrina sits within the Fleurieu Peninsula, one of South Australia's most popular holiday destinations.
It is part of the Melbourne to Adelaide Touring Route and a key stopover for travellers heading to Kangaroo Island from the east, making it an ideal base for exploring the best of South Australia.
Visitors are drawn to our region for its rich mix of food, wine, arts, culture, heritage, nature, wildlife, and coastal and aquatic experiences.
From spontaneous day trips to planned escapes, the Fleurieu Peninsula’s Regional Visitor Strategy – part of the South Australian Regional Visitor Strategy – is focused on welcoming visitors year-round, encouraging them to stay longer, spend more, and enjoy the good life at their own pace (see snapshot).
Tourism is a vital part of the Alexandrina Council economy, supporting 828 local jobs (17.4%), contributing $70 million in value, and generating $166 million in gross regional output.
Our region welcomes thousands of visitors each year who come to experience the lifestyle we enjoy every day.
On average, domestic overnight visitors stay 3 nights and spend $603 per trip, while international visitors stay 11 nights and spend $1,491 per trip (Remplan data, October 2025).
Economic Development’s Role in Tourism
Economic Development plays a key enabling role in tourism through strong partnerships with regional organisations.
We fund and work closely with our two key regional tourism partners, Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism (FPT) and the Murray River Lakes & Coorong Tourism Alliance (MRLCTA), to support tourism development and promote the region.
These partnerships are central to our economic development approach.
Economic Development also contributes to the visitor experience through the strategic development of tourism assets such as the Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail, driving major events including the SA Wooden Boat Festival, and facilitating placemaking, such as the activation of Goolwa Wharf.
Supporting Digital Tourism Marketing
We strongly encourage local tourism and hospitality operators to list on the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW) – a national platform that boosts visibility and reach, giving local businesses the chance to tap into state and national tourism marketing and be listed on hundreds of tourism websites.
We also encourage and support businesses to create bookable experiences and events to attract visitors, using tools like Rezdy.
If you are a local operator and want to grow your presence in the visitor economy, get in touch with us and we can help you get started with ATDW and Rezdy.
