The River Murray is Australia’s longest river. It is 2508km long, spanning from New South Wales, Victoria to South Australia. It provides us with water for about 1.5 million households, as well as farms and other businesses along its length, and a habitat to many native and migratory species.

Located at the end of the River Murray, the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth provide a range of freshwater, estuarine and marine wetland habitats. These wetlands support a very diverse range of plants and animals.

In South Australia, water management is administered through the Department for Environment and Water, and Landscape South Australia, pending on the requirements.

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority is Australia’s key agency responsible for coordinating how the Basin’s water resources are managed through the Basin Plan.
