Connecting through the Art of Ageing - Into the Light  short film

Art is a wonderful tool for communication be it visual arts or performance arts it engenders discussion between people leading to greater understanding of life and all its complexities. The role of LGBTQI people in our community is not often seen or promoted but these people young or old are there, as are we all, and we found a pathway via which they communicated with each other in a safe and positive manner. Encouraging them to share their “stories” on film was a creative and hopefully enjoyable experience for the participants.

Encouraging the LGBTQI community to meet up in a relaxed environment, facilitating a “getting to know you” atmosphere and gently guiding conversations between generations of their lived experience growing up as a “different” member of our society, teasing out their stories, emphasising some aspects which may encourage both young and old to share their pleasure and perhaps pain served to strengthen connections between young and old in the community.

The Alexandrina Youth Theatre and Film group worked with older members of the LGBTIQA+ community to create the 'Into the Light' short film under the direction of Lyn Pike, and film maker Mike Tye.

Our many thanks to members of the Alexandrina Youth Theatre and Film group, Lyn Pike, Mike Tye, Southern Fleurieu Film Society, Office for Ageing Well, SA Health, and photographer  Richard Hodges for their sponsorship.

Collaboration between the Alexandrina Arts and Culture staff and the Connecting through the Art of Ageing project team facilitated the creation of this short film which we are proud to present.

Please enjoy the ‘Into the Light Film’.  We encourage you the share the link with family and friends to continue the conversations.

The “Rainbow Horizons: Don’t leave me this way” report aims to strengthen social approaches to end of life support where many can play a role in partnership:

  • People working in health and other service providers associated with end of life matters
  • LGBTI+ organisations
  • People who identify as LGBTI+
  • Organisations interested in financing this work further.

The project’s compassionate community model was designed in collaboration with the LGBTI+ community, providers and other stakeholders.

Steps for improvement include continuous learning about the specific needs of LGBTI+ people, building community support networks and planning early.
